Poco.lit / Editorial Illustration

In cooperation with Poco.lit, this illustration accompanies this essay by Ila Mägdefrau about indentured laborers at the boundaries of postcolonial categories. It tells about generations of indentured Indian laborers in colonial South Africa. Over time, these communities developed their infrastructure, anchoring themselves materially and culturally in their new context. This identity, distinct from both their Indian origins and colonial classifications, laid the groundwork for solidarity with other oppressed groups, as reflected later in South Africa’s Black Consciousness movement.
